Knee-High Naturalists “Feathered Friends”

Children ages 5 and younger are invited to have some fun with our feathered friends! We’ll learn about birds, what they eat, and how bird feeders help them find food. Each child will make a bird treat to take home and place in their yard. We’ll also venture
outdoors to help feed the birds at the Environmental Learning Center! Pre-registrations are needed, and you can sign up using the QR code at the top of this page. A minimum of 5 kids is needed to hold the program.

Non-Soil Fumigation Continuing Instruction

Preregister before November 10 for fall commercial pesticide applicator Continuing Instruction Course

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Mahaska  County office will host a Non-Soil Fumigation Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) for commercial and private pesticide applicators on Tuesday, November 17, 2026. The program provided by the ISU Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP), is available at office locations across Iowa.

The local attendance site is the Mahaska County Extension Office, 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa. Preregistration may be required; walk-ins may not be guaranteed admission. This course starts at 9:00am. Program run times may vary based on topics presented, please allow for up to three hours to complete the program. The registration fee is $45 on or before November 10 and $60 after November 10. To register or to obtain additional information about the CIC, contact Suzette Striegel at the ISU Extension and Outreach Mahaska County office at 641-673-5841.

The course will provide continuing instruction credit for commercial pesticide applicators certified in category7C (Fumigation) and private pesticide applicators who are certified to apply fumigants. Topics covered will include personal protective equipment including respirators; professionalism, storage of pesticides, including chemical security; and pests, pest management, and pesticides.

Additional information and registration forms for this and other courses offered by the PSEP program can be accessed at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/PSEP. Please note that attendance at a CIC does not automatically renew an applicator’s certification with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS).

The program, provided by the ISU Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP), is available at office locations across Iowa.

The local attendance site is the Mahaska County Extension office, 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa. Preregistration may be required; walk-ins may not be guaranteed admission. The king and queen will be announced on Monday, November 30 @ 6:00 pm in Penn Central Mall. All participants will receive great prizes and will have the opportunity to participate in the "Winter Wonderland: Let it Glow" Lighted Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7pm.
