Drop off your empty, clean plastic bags at the Friends of Mahaska Conservation Mobile Plastic Shopping Bag Recycling Unit to help reach their goal. This is a perfect way to eliminate clutter at your house, help the environment and allow the organization to provide benches and picnic tables at the county parks. All of the bags will be baled and taken to Plastic Recycling of Iowa Falls for processing.

NAMI Family Support Group

NAMI Family Support Group is for any adult with a loved one who has experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. This group meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from 5 p.m.- 6 p.m. via Zoom and in person at the Optimae Building (209 E. Maple St) in Centerville. Knee High Naturalists "Owls"

Bring your children ages 5 and younger out to the Environmental Learning Center on Wednesday, May 7 from 9-10 am for the monthly Knee-High Naturalist program. This FREE program is designed to help foster learning about nature and exploring the outdoors. We ask that adults bringing children remain with them during the program.

On May 7th, the activity is titled "Owls". Kids will learn about owls and go on a hike where owls live. They will also learn how to call for owls and make owl puppets.

Homeschool Science Lab "Fishing at Russell Wildlife Area"

The Mahaska County Conservation Board invites homeschool and online school families to the monthly Homeschool Science Lab on Wednesday, May 7th from 1:00-2:00 pm at (pond 1) Russell Wildlife Area.

The topic for May will be "Fishing". Kids will have an opportunity to go fishing. All fishing equipment are provided, but feel free to bring your own.

Join us and Americorps Green in the Reading Room for Gardening 101! Be sure to check out the Seed Library while your there.

Terrarium Class

Join Mahaska County Conservation at the Environmental Learning Center for a fun and creative experience! On Thursday, May 8 from 6:00-7:00 pm, Molly Hicks will teach participants about different types of terrariums and teach you how to build your own closed-style terrarium to take home. This is the perfect class for all levels of plant enthusiasts! All materials will be provided by Mahaska County Conservation.

The cost is $5 per person and you can pay at the event. Limited to 15 participants.

William Penn University Commencement

Mahaska CERT Training Classes: CPR, AED, First Aid

Dates for Classes: 

• May 10, 2025 - 8am-12pm
• August 23, 2025 - 8am-12pm
• November 15, 2025 - 8am-12pm

All classes follow the national guidelines from the American Heart Association. If an American Heart certification card is requested, the cost is $35. If a certification card is not needed, the class is free. 

To register, email jwalker@mahaskacountyia.gov. You must be registered five (5) days prior to the date of the class to attend. 

A minimum class size is 10 people. If that number is not met, you will be notified and then have the option to attend the next scheduled class. 

Payment method: cash, card, or check. 

Please make check payable to Mahaska County CERT and place CPR on memo line. Exact cash needed, if paying with cash.

The Perfectly Imperfect Christmas Tree and recently If I Were a Caterpillar. She is a retired Hospice Social worker and lives in Ankeny with her husband Dave. Dave is very involved with this mission also. 

Have you ever imagined you were a caterpillar? What color caterpillar would you like to be? Have fun and imagine along with ten children as they play in a park and dream about what color caterpillar they might be, if they got to choose.

If I Were a Caterpillar helps children learn about colors and use their imagination along the way! They each find joy in their own idea of what they could be. This colorful, fun, and simple book even includes a blank caterpillar so that your child can color it with whatever colors they'd like to be.

Springtime Highland Cow Painting

Every month we travel to Smokey Row on the third Thursday to bring a fun painting event to the Oskaloosa area! Please join us for Mays on the 15th. 
For the month of May we’ll be celebrating spring with fun highland cow piece… so adorable with his butterfly friend. Pair this with a yummy drink and you’ve got a perfect evening.

Each ticket is just 30$ a piece and the event starts at 6 pm. There are 2 ways to register/pay:

2. Register at Smokey Row by filling out the sign up sheet and paying at the register with 30$ cash or check made out to That Paint & Pottery Place. (They have a special drop box just for payment for the paint classes behind the counter)

Graffiti Night with the Rollin' Oldies Car Club

WPU Youth Football Camp Session 1

Join us for the WPU Youth Football Camp, where young athletes in grades 2 through 8 can develop their football skills, build teamwork, and have fun in a supportive environment. Each session runs from 9 AM to 12 PM, with two available sessions: June 3–5 and June 17–19. The cost is $75 per session, and camp will be held at the Penn Activity Center (PAC).

Participants should bring cleats, workout attire, and a completed PAC Waiver Form, which will be emailed after registration. The waiver can be brought on the first day of camp or emailed in advance to Coach Garth at grant.garth@wmpenn.edu. Plus, every camper receives a free T-shirt! Don’t miss this chance to hit the field, learn from experienced coaches, and take your game to the next level. We look forward to seeing you there!

Knee-High Naturalists "Exploring Ice"

Bring your children ages 5 and younger out to the Environmental Learning Center on Wednesday, June 4th from 9-10 am for the monthly Knee-High Naturalist program. This FREE program is designed to help foster learning about nature and exploring the outdoors. We ask that adults bringing children remain with them during the program.

On June 4th, the activity is titled "Exploring Ice". Kids will stay cool while engaging in fun, hands-on activities and experiments with ice! They'll explore how ice forms and melts through exciting, interactive experiments. It's an immersive, learning-packed experience that lets them discover science in a playful way!

Oskaloosa City Band Summer Concert Series

The Oskaloosa City Band begins its Summer Concert Series the first Thursday of June and generally ends on the first Thursday of August.  The band has been performing Summer Concerts every year sine 1864.  The band performs a variety of music each night to please all ages.  

Join the Oskaloosa City Band in the Norman Rockwell setting of the bandstand in the downtown city park!  Local businesses provide free popcorn, lemonade, iced tea, bottled water and more!  Fundraising organizations sell pie by the slice, while ice cream, shaved ice and other treats are available for purchase as well.  Park benches are available but you might want to bring your favorite lawn chair or a blanket to relax under the shade trees while listening to the soothing sounds of the City Band.  We hope to see you there!!

New Sharon Spring Festival

New Sharon's Spring Festival, formerly known as the Rose Festival, is a long-standing tradition. 2025 Spring Festival will be held June 6th and 7th.

Coffee Club at the ELC

Join us at Mahaska County Conservation's monthly "Coffee Club at the ELC" on Friday, June 6 from 9:00-10:00 am. We meet upstairs in the Discovery Lab and have homemade refreshments served along with freshly brewed coffee.

Monkey Kingdom Documentary

This documentary is about an adventure of a young monkey and her son, who live among the ancient jungle ruins. Uplifting Puppet Parade: Fins and Feathers

Uplifting Puppet Parade Makes its Debut with “Fins and Feathers” Theme!
Oskaloosa, IA – Get ready to spread joy, make some noise, and show off your creativity! The Uplifting Puppet Parade is set to liven up downtown Oskaloosa on Saturday, June 14 at 2:00 PM as part of this year’s Art on the Square celebration. This vibrant event is made possible through generous support from the Iowa Arts Council, a grant from the Mahaska County Community Foundation (MCCF), and a network of community partnerships.

Beginning May 26, giant puppet projects will take shape under the artistic direction of Brant Bollman, Creative Director of Uplifting Puppet Co., and visiting artist Piper Smith, a Minneapolis-based puppeteer affiliated with BareBones Outdoor Puppetry and Performance Art Spectacular. Together, they will guide community members through the creation of large-scale puppets and visual elements for the parade.

Community workshops and events will be announced soon, inviting participants of all ages and skill levels to help build original puppets, costumes, and banners. This year’s magical theme, “Fins and Feathers,” celebrates the natural world—encouraging participants to craft imaginative representations of birds of the air and fish of the sea.

In addition, Take-it and Make-it Kits will be available for local organizations, youth groups, and families—complete with supplies to create your own parade accoutrements and join the joyful march.

Grab your noisemakers, bring your creative spirit, and march alongside musicians, puppeteers, and community members in a colorful explosion of creativity and connection!

WPU Youth Football Camp Session 2

Join us for the WPU Youth Football Camp, where young athletes in grades 2 through 8 can develop their football skills, build teamwork, and have fun in a supportive environment. Each session runs from 9 AM to 12 PM, with two available sessions: June 3–5 and June 17–19. The cost is $75 per session, and camp will be held at the Penn Activity Center (PAC).

Participants should bring cleats, workout attire, and a completed PAC Waiver Form, which will be emailed after registration. The waiver can be brought on the first day of camp or emailed in advance to Coach Garth at grant.garth@wmpenn.edu. Plus, every camper receives a free T-shirt! Don’t miss this chance to hit the field, learn from experienced coaches, and take your game to the next level. We look forward to seeing you there!

Mahaska County Farm to Table Dinner

ISU Mahaska County Extension and Outreach and Mahaska County Farm Bureau are again partnering to host the fourth annual Farm to Table dinner. This event highlights local farmers and embraces the importance of knowing where our food comes from. It is a great community event that is open to the public. It will be in Bradbury Hall at the Nelson Pioneer Farm on Monday, June 23, 2025.

Mahaska County 4-H Honor Council members are an important partner in this effort as well. This is a group of 8th - 12th grade 4-H members who provide leadership for 4-H activities, participate in community events, and provide community service throughout the county. The Honor Council uses this as a fundraiser to offset the costs of their community events.

Through this meal, we wish to highlight the wonderful products and talents of local producers. The Farm to Table meal with provide a connection between our local farmers and the community. Our menu will feature a full meal made up of ingredients sourced locally.

Tickets for the Farm to Table Dinner can be purchased at the link below. Tickets are $30.00 and include an appetizer, entree, dessert, and drink from locally sourced producers. 

We are still collecting donations to make this event and future Honor Council projects a success. To contribute, you can send or drop off a check to Mahaska County Extension and Outreach at 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa 52577. We are a 501C3.

As the summer day cools into evening, join us for a canoeing adventure on Pond 1 at Russell Wildlife Area. Mahaska County Conservation staff will teach you canoeing skills and safety. You’ll have time to paddle around the pond and enjoy some fun water games. All equipment will be provided. Kids must be 10 years old or older to paddle a canoe. Kids under 10 need to have an adult paddle for them.

Join the naturalist for lunch at one of Mahaska County’s beautiful parks! Bring your lunch, along with a blanket or lawn chair to sit on. Enjoy learning about the park of the day and connect with other participants. Each person who attends will have their name entered into a drawing for a prize at the final Lunch in the Park on July 28th. This documentary is about several lions and cheetahs trying to survive on the African savannah. The film follows Mara, a lovable lion cub striving to inherit her mother’s strength, spirit, and wisdom; Sita, a courageous cheetah raising five playful newborns on her own; and Fang, a proud lion leader who must protect his family from a rival lion and his sons. Feel free to bring snacks. Some refreshments will be provided.

Discovery Day Camp "Backyard Bugs"

Discovery Camp “Backyard Bugs”

Children will explore the fascinating world of insects, learning about their characteristics and behavior, followed by a craft and fun hike to search for real-life insects. Participants should bring a snack and an adult to stay with them.

B.A.R.K Ranger Hike

Bring your dog and explore Mahaska County's beautiful White Oak Conservation Area and earn a B.A.R.K. Ranger Certificate! White Oak has a hiking trail around a 20-acre lake that will give you and your dog a fun and memorable adventure. We will meet at the Cardinal shelter in the park. Come join us!

Mahaska County B.A.R.K. Ranger dog tags will also be available for purchase as a special memento.

Just a friendly reminder—dogs must remain on a leash in the park!

Oskaloosa City Band Summer Concert Series

The Oskaloosa City Band continues its Summer Concert Series through August 7.  The band has been performing Summer Concerts every year sine 1864.  The band performs a variety of music each night to please all ages.  

Join the Oskaloosa City Band in the Norman Rockwell setting of the bandstand in the downtown city park!  Local businesses provide free popcorn, lemonade, iced tea, bottled water and more!  Fundraising organizations sell pie by the slice, while ice cream, shaved ice and other treats are available for purchase as well.  Park benches are available but you might want to bring your favorite lawn chair or a blanket to relax under the shade trees while listening to the soothing sounds of the City Band.  We hope to see you there!!
