This free program is designed for children ages 5 and younger. Bring a special item from nature to share with the group,
such as a rock, pinecone, leaf, or seedpod. If you find something that cannot or should not be collected, take a photo and
bring it instead. Each child will have an opportunity to show their item and share what makes it interesting. Please do not
bring songbird feathers, bird nests, or eggs. Pre-registrations are needed. Sign up using the QR code at the top of this
page. A minimum of 5 kids is needed to hold the program.

9/11 Commemoration Ceremony.

With the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaching, the Oskaloosa Fire Department would like to invite community members to the Oskaloosa town square on September 11, 2026, for a short commemoration ceremony.
Beginning at 9 a.m., the event will give attendees the opportunity to recognize local first responders, view the temporary display of flags planted by the Oskaloosa High School Student Council, representing the 2,977 individuals who lost their lives on 9/11, and a Musco Mobile truck flying the American flag that flew over Ground Zero.
The brief program will also include comments from Iowa Senator and volunteer firefighter, Adrian Dickey, along with Diane Crookham-Johnson from Musco Lighting and Oskaloosa Fire Chief Scott Vaughan. The program will conclude with a bell ceremony and the playing of “Amazing Grace” on the bag pipes. There will be open areas for attendees to stand, bring a lawn chair, or put down a blanket during the ceremony.
Today and every day, we never forget the extraordinary courage and sacrifice shown by the first responders on 9/11. We encourage you to join the Oskaloosa Fire Department in commemorating the 25th anniversary on September 11, 2026.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is sponsoring ServSafe®, the national certification program for food service managers. The course will be held on September 17 at Mahaska County Extension Office located at 212 N. I Street in Oskaloosa. All food service operations are required to have at least one certified staff person. Anyone interested in preparing and serving safe food is welcome to attend.
The cost of the course is $175, which includes 8 hours of class time, a manual, and the national certification exam. There is a discounted rate of $150 available for Iowa Restaurant Association members with verification prior to class. Registration is required by August 27.
