Online Grant Writing 101 Workshop
Oskaloosa, IAApril 1, 2026
9:00 am · 11:00 am
Grant Writing 101 provides foundational training for individuals who want to identify funding opportunities and prepare clear, competitive applications. The workshop reviews common grant terminology, how to locate funding sources and practical strategies for planning and writing a successful proposal.
“Grant writing is easier to approach when you understand the process,” said Lindsay Henderson, development specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “This workshop breaks the work into practical steps, helping you move from identifying funders to writing a strong proposal.”
Henderson emphasized that the workshop is designed for people at all levels of experience. “Some participants come in having never written a grant, while others want to refine their approach,” she said. “No matter their background, they leave with tools they can immediately apply to improve their next application.”
The session also covers how to outline project goals, gather supporting information, avoid frequent pitfalls and strengthen budget and narrative components.
The registration fee is $40 per participant, and advance enrollment is required.
For more information, visit the Grant Writing webpage or contact Lindsay Henderson at lindsayh@iastate.edu.

Iowa Big Tree Program Presentation
Oskaloosa, IAApril 10, 2026
10:00 am
Big trees are not just the Redwoods and Sequoias on the west coast – Iowa has some big trees too! Arborists and tree-enthusiasts are invited to attend a presentation given by Mark Rouw, a longtime volunteer for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Iowa Big Tree Program. The presentation is hosted by the Mahaska County Master Gardeners and will be held Friday April 10 at 10 am. It will be at the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – Mahaska County office, 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa.
During the first part of the presentation, Mark will cover several different ways to measure the heights and circumferences of trees to get accurate measurements. Rouw will also take attendees through decades of his own tree findings, sharing photos and measurements of state and national champion trees he’s monitored throughout Iowa since the Iowa Big Tree Program it began in 1978. Rouw began measuring trees in the early ‘70s, before the Big Tree Program existed. He said the mission of the program is to bring awareness to the large trees around Iowa and help people become more concerned with preserving them.
This presentation is open to the public for anyone wishing to learn about the topic; both adults and youth. There is no fee to attend due to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach–Mahaska County and Mahaska County Master Gardener support. Registration is not required, but appreciated. To register, or for additional information about horticulture programming please contact Suzette Striegel, Mahaska County Extension Horticulture and Education Program Coordinator by phone 641-673-5841 or email striegel@iastate.edu.
Inclement weather will postpone the presentation. If in doubt, please check local media, ISU Extension Outreach – Mahaska County office, website or Facebook page, or Mahaska County Master Gardeners Facebook pages.
Laurie Dams, the Iowa DNR’s Urban and Community Forest technician, said all trees in the Iowa Big Tree registry have been assigned ID numbers to better track their growth. The program is also working to include all the substantial trees across Iowa on its Big Tree Map. “The beautiful trees Mark will show you are featured on our map,” Dams said. “
Rouw, who is also an animal specialist at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines, said his passion for trees began with identifying tree types and then expanded to hunting for the biggest trees he could find. “I’ve always been interested in nature,” Rouw said. “I could have devoted my time to birds, or reptiles…but if I had to pick one thing, it would be trees. That’s what I’ve devoted the most time to.”
Mahaska County Master Gardeners are celebrating their twenty-third year. The local program was organized after the county held their first training in 2003. The educational volunteer program, sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, provides current, research based, home horticulture information and education to the citizens of Iowa through programs and projects. Master Gardeners receive horticulture training, and volunteer to promote a mission of education and service. The program is open to anyone 18 or older with an interest in gardening and a willingness to use their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to make a positive impact on their local community.
More information about this and other horticulture events can be found at the Mahaska County Extension Office; 212 North I Street; Oskaloosa Phone 641-673-5841; and www.extension.iastate.edu/mahaska/yardgarden.htm.

Last Call to Redemption: New Christian Novel Explores Forgiveness Through Faith
A man finds peace with God through forgiveness.
In Last Chance Forgiveness, Petty Officer William Cole’s life is a testament to resilience and redemption. Struggling with alcoholism and haunted by memories of an abusive childhood and the horrors of Vietnam, Billy finds himself at a crossroads. As he contemplates ending his life in an empty church, a chance encounter with a compassionate pastor ignites a spark of hope. This pivotal moment sets him on a transformative journey toward healing and forgiveness. Through the pastor’s guidance, Billy begins to understand the profound power of forgiveness – not just for himself but for others. Billy’s story resonates with anyone who has faced emotional or spiritual wounds, offering a message of hope and renewal. As he embraces forgiveness, he becomes a source of inspiration for those around him, demonstrating that even the most broken can find healing and purpose.

In celebration of Earth Day, MCG invites residents to safely recycle unwanted electronics during this free, drive thru event. Volunteers will unload items while participants remain in their vehicles. Electronics will be recycled or repurposed by an Iowa-based partner, keeping hazardous materials out of landfills. Since 2007, the event has diverted more than 753,000 pounds of e-waste from landfills. Organizers hope to collect more than 50,000 pounds this year. Attendees are also encouraged to: • Bring plastic shopping and grocery bags for Friends of Mahaska County Conservation’s Push for One Million campaign • Learn about tree planting efforts from Oskaloosa Trees Forever • Recycle batteries to help reduce landfill fire risks MORE INFO: Accepted items list: www.mahaska.org/oskaloosaecycle
