Job Description

Music Director – Part-Time

Hours: 20 hours per week, flexible schedule

Reports To: Senior Pastor(s)

Supervises: Volunteers

Salary: $23,000 annually

Position Overview

First Christian Church (DOC) in Oskaloosa, IA is looking for a creative and passionate Music Director to help shape the heart of our worship. FCC is seeking someone who loves using music to connect people to God—such as leading a praise team or exploring other musical expressions like choirs or bells. This role offers the freedom to be flexible, collaborate with a supportive staff, and inspire musicians of all ages to grow in their gifts and faith

Key Responsibilities

• Music Ministry Leadership: Lead praise teams and bands as the primary focus; support and develop other potential musical groups such as vocal choirs and bell choirs. Direct rehearsals and provide musical leadership during worship services.

• Musical Oversight: Select songs, hymns, and musical arrangements that align with FCC’s faith, vision, and worship style. Coordinate all musical aspects of weekly and special services.

• Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with pastoral staff, office staff, worship committees, and volunteers to integrate music into worship, communicate programming, and align efforts with FCC’s mission.

• Musical Development: Recruit, mentor, and support singers and musicians of all ages; encourage spiritual and musical growth; create and expand musical groups as needed.

• Administrative Duties: Manage music budgets, schedule rehearsals, review weekly worship slides, coordinate AV needs, maintain instruments, provide written reports to the FCC Board, and attend worship team meetings. 

Expectations & Commitments

• Weekly praise team rehearsals

• Sunday morning worship leadership

• Staff and board meeting participation

• Special services, including Christmas Eve, Easter, Maundy Thursday, and Ash Wednesday

• In-church office presence expected, with flexibility to complete other duties remotely 

Qualifications

• Experience leading or participating in praise teams, bands, or other worship music groups (formal directing experience a plus but not required).

• Ability to select and lead music that helps the congregation connect with God in worship.

• Musical versatility—comfortable with contemporary worship songs as well as traditional hymns.

• Strong communication and organizational skills.

• A heart for mentoring and encouraging volunteers of all ages.

• Commitment to the mission and values of First Christian Church.

As an integral part of the overall care team, you will collaborate with other Direct Support Professionals, Programmers, Supervisors, individuals-served, and their families to ensure the best possible support is provided. This position will provide support to individuals served with intellectual disabilities and/or a behavioral health diagnosis. Your innovative and impactful solutions and strategies will make a difference for those you serve.

  • Serve on Imagine’s Quality Team as a medical/behavioral representative on the Responsive Services Committee for identified regions. 
  • Provide oversight and support (in-person and virtual) to individuals with complex medical and/or behavioral challenges.
  • Serve as a liaison with the care team for individuals-served, including psychiatry, therapists, pharmacy, and support staff. This includes:

o Providing resources and support to individuals in crisis.

o Showing empathy and compassion in interactions with individuals experiencing mental health challenges.

o Participating and providing support within the implementation of an individual’s care plan, including their interventions and additional supports.

o Connecting individuals and/or staff with resources/education necessary as it relates to mental health, chemical dependency, or inappropriate sexual behaviors.

  • Assist in the development, training, implementation, and monitoring of individuals-served complex medical and/or behavioral support plans. This role requires you to have extensive knowledge in mental health/psychiatric nursing. This means you will also assist with individual-served crisis intervention and risk management planning through supporting the development and review of appropriate, time-limited rights restrictions, behavioral supports, and intervention plans.
  • Assist with medication administration, as needed. This could include assisting with the development and review of curriculum and remedial training for our direct care teams.
  • Be an advocate for individuals receiving services to have as much control over their own lives as possible. All individuals should be treated with respect and should feel empowered to live their life as independently as physically possible.
